And here's something else you never hear about...

    Disability is not Diversity?

They're right - when politicians talk about minority groups, most have yet to recognize the disabled.

What are the candidates going to do to ensure the disabled have their rights protected? What are they going to do to make sure disability pay is not legislated out of existence?

    Murders in Juarez Mexico
We just got done watching the movie Bordertown. Neither M nor I remember this one being aired in theaters. It's about the rapes and murders of woman near American-owned factories on the border between Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, TX.

This is an ugly little fact you never hear about when they talk about NAFTA.

    Here are some other sources:

    Ciudad Juarez:The Serial Killer's Playground

    WOLA.org -Juarez Murders

NPR - Explosive Theory on Killings of Juarez Women

    An Article from AmnestyUSA.org

Anyone who is familiar with law enforcement and politics in Mexico can tell you that there is a very deep level of corruption. One of the things the movie highlighted is the idea that some of the perpetrators may be of the Mexican upperclass, and therefore, will never be prosecuted.

Nobody wants to hear about poor Mexican women being murdered, right? Obviously not, when there is money to be made. The bottom line is all that counts.

Obama and McCain are both pro-NAFTA. Are they aware of these murders? Chances are they are not, and as long as they kowtow to their Korporate Amerika financiers, they will continue to ignore it.

Help me bring this news to light. Feel free to copy this post to your own journal.

Fake Soldiers Used In RNC Video
    Sauce

Patriotic Montage Shown At RNC Featured Actors Hired For One Day Shoot, Not Military

It was a video that was supposed to elicit soaring patriotism and real emotions about the Pledge of Allegiance. But to do that, it used fake soldiers and a staged military funeral instead of the real thing.

On Tuesday night, 15-year-old Victoria Blackstone, a sophomore at the St. Agnes School in St. Paul, led the crowd at the Xcel Energy Center in the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience heard her 434-word essay, “Pledging myself to the Flag of the United States of America,” an essay she’d entered it in the “Wave the Stars & Stripes” essay contest and won. The RNC turned that essay into a three and a half minute video, a visually stirring montage rolling over Victoria’s words about sharing the Pledge with Americans who have stood at important moments in history.

There’s the Continental Congress…A real WWII vet…Photos of workers at Ground Zero. A close-up of a folded flag presented to a grieving widow at a military funeral… profiles of soldiers swelling with pride in slo-motion.

But CBS News found that the footage of the ‘funeral’ and soldiers is what is called ‘stock’ footage. The soldiers were actors and the funeral scene was from a one-day film shoot, produced in June. No real soldiers were used during production.

The footage, sold by stock-film house Getty Images was produced by a commercial filmmaker in Chicago. Both Getty and the production company, Mr. Big Films, confirmed that the footage was shot on spec and sold to the Republican National Committee.

One of the actors, Perry Denton of Chicago, IL also confirmed that he was hired on a day-rate as an actor for the shoot and told CBS News he was surprised to learn the footage was shown at the convention.

A veteran’s advocate said that with soldiers still deployed and in harm’s way, there is an obligation not to sugar coat reality.

“What it does reveal is a serious lack of understanding and a lack of personal connection to the military,” said Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Rieckhoff, who is at the convention with a contingent of veterans added that a video tribute to Medal of Honor Winner Michael Monsoor, a Navy Seal killed in Iraq, shown on Tuesday night, used combat video that appeared to him and several other veterans of the Iraq war to have been staged.

After a Web search of videos played at the Democratic National Convention last week, CBS News found no obvious use of stock footage.

The RNC did not respond to CBS News’ request for a comment.

    Here's the video:

    Tarot.com Daily Horoscope - Taurus
Thursday, Sep 4th, 2008 -- Although today's intense Scorpio Moon can pull us into deep emotional waters where rational thoughts won't necessarily save the day, we are still blessed with a saving grace. Unfortunately, we may be suffering with unpleasant hangovers from yesterdays reality check, a sobering Sun-Saturn conjunction. The illuminating Sun and jovial Jupiter are in sympathetic harmony now as their trine reinforces the positive aspects of our lives.

You catch on to new ideas very quickly today, perhaps because you are so eager to broaden your horizons. Oftentimes you are quite satisfied maintaining a comfortable and defensible position, but now you are confident enough to want more. What you learn doesn't have to contradict your philosophical foundation. It can build on what you already know.

    Budget getting tight
As all of you from the United States know, things are getting mighty tough, even for those who were doing ok financially. Well, us owners aren't doing so hot financially.

I know some of you are new so this will be the first time you read this.

When we set up CommieJournal in the fall of 2007 (yes, we're almost a year old!) it was in direct response to the apparent censorship being displayed by Live Journal. Fandom was hit especially hard back then, and lots of fandom people said they'd be delighted to move if we put forth the effort to bring a LJ-clone site online.

Well, we did, and there weren't very many people who made the move. Quite a few DID, however, find their way over here from GreatestJournal, which, as far as I know, is still closing down.

A relative minority of folks here have paid and permanent accounts. If that doesn't change, we need to up donations. Even a dollar sent to our P.O. Box would help.

With food and gas prices rising the way they have been, we, the owners, are pinched even tighter at home than we were when the server rent was $169 per month. Now, it's $89.95 per month, and even that is getting hard to come by.

There are two things I'd like everyone to do:

    • Please consider chipping in to keep CJ going, and
    • Start telling your friends about CJ so they come over here and sign up. One of our biggest problems is a lack of advertising.

In the meantime, we have no choice but to put advertising on the front page of this site. We don't want to have to run them on the pages of free accounts, but if things don't change pretty soon, we may be looking into that, as a way to keep the site up and running. I know we said we'd never do that when we started the site, but we have no gotten the response we expected to bringing it online and we don't want to desert those who DO have paying accounts.

This is the reality, folks. Feel free to post suggestions if you have any.

    What kind of heart?

Your result for The Heart Test...

    Healer's Heart

You are 80% Independent, 50% Idealistic, 30% Intimate, and 80% Indulgent!

    The Healer's Heart

    Independent, Realistic, Passionate, Indulgent

You are the most altruistic of hearts, the Healer's Heart. You are realistic in your approach to love and value your independence. At the same time you are very passionate about love and want to do whatever in your power to make things run smoothly. You will relieve whatever pain you can in your mate. At the same time, you recognize the need to be there for others as well. Still, you will always be there for your mate and will never hurt them if you can help it.

    Matches for the Healer's Heart:

    The Lonely Heart

The Lonely Heart wants to be loved, but may not know how to go about it. Your healing nature will bring out the hidden aspects of their heart and you will appreciate their intimate nature and need for love, and associate with their realistic views and want for harmony.

    The Broken Heart

The Broken Heart needs to be loved, which is fine with you, but they also can be a bit quarrelsome, something you may not like. But your healing nature should help them with this, and your independent nature can allow you to give them the space they need to cool off. Ultimately, you will find it very rewarding to be the one to mend the Broken Heart, and you will come to cherish them.

Your exact opposite is the Heart on Sleeve.

Avoid Independents when you can. You are independent yourself, but aren't happy unless you are helping others, so you need those who need you to be fulfilled in a relationship. Explicits may also be difficult to get along with as you value harmony, but you should be able to work it out.

DIGITAL MAOISM: The Hazards of the New Online Collectivism
    Introduction

In "Digital Maosim", an original essay written for Edge, computer scientist and digital visionary Jaron Lanier finds fault with what he terms the new online collectivism. He cites as an example the Wikipedia, noting that "reading a Wikipedia entry is like reading the bible closely. There are faint traces of the voices of various anonymous authors and editors, though it is impossible to be sure".

His problem is not with the unfolding experiment of the Wikipedia itself, but "the way the Wikipedia has come to be regarded and used; how it's been elevated to such importance so quickly. And that is part of the larger pattern of the appeal of a new online collectivism that is nothing less than a resurgence of the idea that the collective is all-wise, that it is desirable to have influence concentrated in a bottleneck that can channel the collective with the most verity and force. This is different from representative democracy, or meritocracy. This idea has had dreadful consequences when thrust upon us from the extreme Right or the extreme Left in various historical periods. The fact that it's now being re-introduced today by prominent technologists and futurists, people who in many cases I know and like, doesn't make it any less dangerous".

And he notes that "the Wikipedia is far from being the only online fetish site for foolish collectivism. There's a frantic race taking place online to become the most "Meta" site, to be the highest level aggregator, subsuming the identity of all other sites".

Where is this leading? Lanier calls attention to the "so-called 'Artificial Intelligence' and the race to erase personality and be most Meta. In each case, there's a presumption that something like a distinct kin to individual human intelligence is either about to appear any minute, or has already appeared. The problem with that presumption is that people are all too willing to lower standards in order to make the purported newcomer appear smart. Just as people are willing to bend over backwards and make themselves stupid in order to make an AI interface appear smart (as happens when someone can interact with the notorious Microsoft paper clip,) so are they willing to become uncritical and dim in order to make Meta-aggregator sites appear to be coherent."

Read on as Jaron Lanier throwns a lit Molotov cocktail down towards Palo Alto from up in the Berkeley Hills...

    A Few Important Changes
The owners of CommieJournal have become the victims of stalking and harassment elsewhere on the Internet. Some of our staff has likewise had privacy issues. Because of these concerns, anonymous staff "identities" have been created, and will be used to answer support tickets, post to [info]news , and other such official functions.

In addition, I would like to address the subject of online harassment and stalking, and what protections you can expect from CommieJournal.

It has recently come to our attention, on Live Journal, that their abuse staff refuse to pursue reports of harassment or stalking, unless personal identifying details are being used in the act. That means if someone is hiding behind the relative anonymity of their LJ username, they can pretty much say and do whatever they want, and LJ won't touch them.

That is NOT how we will handle things here on CommieJournal.

If someone is harassing you, and you have the links to prove it, submit a support ticket and include as much information as possible. Links to actual posts and comments are considered reliable evidence. Be aware, however, that each case will be evaluated independent of one another.

If you feel your entire household is being targeted then indicate on your ticket that other members have filed tickets of their own. Including the ticket number(s) from your household member(s) is helpful.

If things are serious enough, we may urge you to contact your local authorities.

REMEMBER: DO NOT PUBLICIZE YOUR FULL NAME, ADDRESS, AND TELEPHONE NUMBER ON THE WEB. Doing so is very dangerous.

We will not allow things to escalate to the point where you have a reason to fear for your safety. We will address it before personal information begins to be "outed". You have our guarantee on that.

If you are a Victim of Cyberstalking

    • Victims who are under the age of 18 should tell their parents or another adult they trust about any harassments and/or threats.
    • Experts suggest that in cases where the offender is known, victims should send the stalker a clear written warning. Specifically, victims should communicate that the contact is unwanted, and ask the perpetrator to cease sending communications of any kind. Victims should do this only once. Then, no matter the response, victims should under no circumstances ever communicate with the stalker again. Victims should save copies of this communication in both electronic and hard copy form.
    • If the harassment continues, the victim may wish to file a complaint with the stalker's Internet service provider, as well as with their own service provider. Many Internet service providers offer tools that filter or block communications from specific individuals.
    • As soon as individuals suspect they are victims of online harassment or cyberstalking, they should start collecting all evidence and document all contact made by the stalker. Save all e-mail, postings, or other communications in both electronic and hard-copy form. If possible, save all of the header information from e-mails and newsgroup postings. Record the dates and times of any contact with the stalker.
    • Victims may also want to start a log of each communication explaining the situation in more detail. Victims may want to document how the harassment is affecting their lives and what steps they have taken to stop the harassment.
    • Victims may want to file a report with local law enforcement or contact their local prosecutor's office to see what charges, if any, can be pursued. Victims should save copies of police reports and record all contact with law enforcement officials and the prosecutor's office.
    • Victims who are being continually harassed may want to consider changing their e-mail address, Internet service provider, a home phone number, and should examine the possibility of using encryption software or privacy protection programs. Any local computer store can offer a variety of protective software, options and suggestions. Victims may also want to learn how to use the filtering capabilities of email programs to block e-mails from certain addresses.
    • Furthermore, victims should contact online directory listings such as www.four11.com, www.switchboard.com, and www.whowhere.com to request removal from their directory.
    • Finally, under no circumstances should victims agree to meet with the perpetrator face to face to "work it out," or "talk." No contact should ever be made with the stalker. Meeting a stalker in person can be very dangerous.

    Copyright on the Internet
Again, for reasons I rather not go into, it is necessary for me to remind certain parties that just because a post, story, or photograph is public, does not mean you can freely link to it.

If you'd like a handy reference, check out 10 Big Myths about copyright explained. This document has been on the Internet for many years and does a great job of answering most Internet copyright questions.

Internet copyright does not simply belong to well-known names or publications. The law also applies to bloggers. Now, I know that many folks, including myself, have reproduced the entire text of articles for the linko-phobic and also for personal reference. In all but a few cases, the publications offering the information have no problem as long as you give proper credit to the original source (I know this personally, because I've communicated with several online publications). HOWEVER - going to another blogger's blog or place where they store photos (such as Live Journal's Scrapbook, or MySpace) - and linking to one of their photos, for ANY reason, WITHOUT their permission, is a direct violation of copyright. If you bothered to look at the link I provided, you will see that an explicit copyright statement does NOT have to be offered on the page or storage site involved. Once something has been stored on a disk, whether it's a floppy disk, a hard disk, a CD or DVD, it becomes "fixed" and therefore copyrighted by default.

Granted, I highly doubt there is a blogger in existence who hasn't created a user icon using a photograph produced by someone else. There again, most sources have no problem with this. Some do - and if the source DOES ask you to take it down, you are obligated by law to do so, whether you like it, or not.

I also won't address the idea of fan fiction here. That fight definitely has at least two sides - the one that says fan fiction creation is a violation of copyright, and the other side which insists that the works are so different as to stand on their own. That subject is best left to others.

No, my biggest concern is with those who link to public photos owned by others for the express purpose of unwelcome criticism or defamation of character. That use is definitely copyright infringement and the owner does NOT have to post a notice to enforce their copyright. Also, unwelcome linking to photos for these purposes does NOT represent "fair use". See the link I provided for more information.

Photograph owners are NOT obligated to hide their works, nor are they obligated to find a way to keep them from being copied. Copyright law is on their side, and I know for a fact that it is enforced on Live Journal (it is also enforced here at CommieJournal).

I used to be a Volunteer on the AOL service, before they discontinued the Volunteer Community Leader program. I was in charge of AOL Hometown websites generated out of the Red Dragon Inn Forum. I also monitored chats and message boards. I worked in those capacities for two and one-half years, right up to when they discontinued the program.

During those years, many copyright questions came up. Considering that it was still fairly "early" in the life of the Internet as we know it, a lot of online-related law was being written while the Internet itself continued to grow. I became tasked with researching copyright law as it applied to the Internet and to text, graphics, and photographs used on the AOL Hometown sites originating out of our section. These rules were later adapted for the message boards, and many of the subjects were eventually incorporated into AOL's overall copyright restrictions. Their lawyers pored over my materials and found that I'd done a thorough job of research.

For most people, they have a fairly good feeling for what can be copied without repercussion, and what cannot be. There is a world of difference between copying the text of a credited article for your own use; it is yet another thing to copy a personal photograph of someone else for the intention of defaming or harassing that person. The first is generally allowed to let slide. The second is a clear violation of copyright and the offender could face a civil suit, or at least lose their ability to repeat their actions.
